4 Problems That Comes With Rainy Season In Nigeria

The rains are here again! Naturally, people should be happy that the rains are here, but not in every part of Nigeria as when it rains in some places, it leaves behind, unmitigated disaster.

As the rains have started pouring down heavily in many parts of Nigeria, there are some damages that are sure to occur, unfortunately, because of the neglect of infrastructures by those in authority.

Naij.com lists 3 challenges that the rains pose for many Nigerians after the heavy downpour this season. Read below:

1. Building Collapse: The rainy season witnesses a lot of building collapsing in Nigeria. Partly, because of the structural state of the buildings. The issue is a major challenge for the authorities as it seem to be a reoccurring experience. Many buildings which are actually dilapidated will no doubt cave in to pressure once the rains continue unabated.

2. Floods: The flooding that accompanies the aftermath of a major downpour in Nigeria is a threat not only to the environment, but also to the society as a whole. It is a regular occurrence for flooding to take-over major areas in both urban and rural areas after a major downpour and this poses a risk to the inhabitants of these areas.

3. Bad Roads: After the flooding comes the damage done to roads. The roads, most of which are already in terrible conditions, becomes worse after heavy rains that leave behind flooding that then wash off the remnants of badly constructed roads by dubious contractors who work hand-in-hand with corrupt government officials at the expense of the citizenry.

4. Heavy Traffic: This is mostly obtainable in urban cities like Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt; and populated towns like Kano, Aba, Onitsha and Warri. After the rains come the floods, then the bad roads, and what usually follow next is traffic gridlock that ends up frustrating commuters who waste precious man hours stuck in their cars, public buses and cabs.

It is expected that government at all levels will use this period to educate the citizenry on the dos and don’ts expected of them this season so they can be cautious in all they do.
