Police Clash With Transport Workers In Akwa Ibom
Daily Trust informs that at least ten members of the Nigeria Union of Road Transports Workers (NURTW) in Akwa Ibom state have sustained injuries of various degrees following a clash on Thursday between them and policemen attached to the Government House in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Members of the union led by their officials stormed the Government House to protest alleged extortion by the police, blocked theroad leading to the government house with their cars thereby preventing visitors and workers from gaining access to the Ministry of Works, Government House Annex, the Prisons, Police Area ‘A’ Division and other offices in the area.
Etim Essien Akpan, a cab driver from Ibesikpo Asutan, who said, “we have been working for the police since the end Governor Godswill Akpabio’s administration Since then, policemen have been harassing us. They ask us to pay N1,000 for every trip we make.”

The drivers have now asked the state governor Udom Emmanuel to intervene in the matter.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Cordelia Nwawe, however denies the extortion allegations as she says she is yet to receive information of the protest.
Recently, members of the NURTW in Ekiti state clashed with Hausa traders in Akikankan area of the state.
