Following the resumption of the 8th National Assembly (Senate) tomorrow, senators from the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, are likely to meet in order to work towards choosing those to make up the minority leadership.

There has been a high supposition within the PDP senate, according to a reliable source, that James Manager of Delta State, who is currently on his fourth term, may be nominated for the minority leadership position at the meeting today. Senator Manager is the oldest member of the senate after the former senate president, Senator David Mark, and followed by current deputy senate president.

On another hand, it has also been revealed that the recent controversial emergence of the senate president, Senator Bukola Saraki, is currently creating very tough time among the All Progressives Congress (APC) senators in a bid to nominate those to be deemed fit for the top leadership positions of majority leader, Chief Whip and their deputies respectively even as their names are meant to be submitted tomorrow at the first plenary session of the hallowed chamber.

Usually in the red chamber, there is the possibility that the senate would, after submitting the list of its Principal Officers tomorrow, order the senators to go on with the formation of the Selection Committee who in turn, forms the standing committees, along with their various chairmen, deputy chairmen and committee members to get the tasks ahead started.

It is, however, hopeful that President Muhammadu Buhari would be forwarding a list of those who have been nominated for ministerial position for the senators to screen.

Meanwhile, another source had also told Daily Independent that in line with the resolve of the new Senate President after his emergence, utmost attention has been drawn and would be focused on issues like the trending disputatious Petroleum Industry Bill, (PIB), the Constitution Review and the yet to be revealed legislative agenda of the 8th Senate.

In line with the PIB, Saraki had, while hosting the Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Osagie Okunbor, reiterated the efforts by the senate to embrace a system of dialogue to ensure that the bill is passed. Senator Saraki asserted that the PIB is a top priority to the senate. In his word, “We have to engage discussion and dialogue. We can break the jinx which can only be achieved devoid of politics. PIB is a priority in this Senate.”

Saraki further admonished that the current controversial issues and political concerns, no matter how essential they may be, should be put aside. He also stated that the senate would break down the bulkiness of the bill and tackle all grey areas.

In another development, the APC crisis worsened on Saturday when senators loyal to Saraki, the Senate president, stated that they would not impose Ahmad Lawan and George Akume as the Senate leader and deputy, respectively.
