PHOTOS: Shocking Moment Of Baby Hippo Eaten Alive By Elder Congeners

Nature can be cruel and the photographs below prove it. An innocent attempt of a mother hippo to introduce her child to the rest of the pod ended in tragedy.

A newborn calf was mauled to death by angry adult specimen in front of his mother. Three adults sank their teeth into a calf’s body and flung it into the air, while its mother was helplessly watching.

Eventually, almost each member of the pod managed to attack the calf, who immediately died of its injuries and was later eaten by a crocodile. The gruesome photos were taken by James Wilson, in the Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe.

James Wilson commented on what he has seen: “Even the most seasoned guides felt a little traumatised by the sight. We’re not sure exactly what possessed the hippo to do this but the point is that this is the reality that is life and death in the African bush. Although all a little startled by what we had just seen, we knew we had been fortunate enough to witness an incredible moment in nature.”
