'Maga Don Pay': 'Babalawo' defrauds man seeking solution to 'spiritual problems' of N180m

A native doctor has been arrested for defrauding a man of N180 million.

A native doctor popularly called 'Babalawo', Adedoyin Oyenuga, has been remanded in prison custody after he was dragged to an Ikeja Magistrate's Court for allegedly defrauding a man who sought for solutions to his spiritual problems to the tune of N180 million under the guise of casting evil spells from the victim.

It was gathered that Oyenuga, who resides in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, had approached his victim, one Ken Onwuka, at a petrol station at Jakande roundabout, Lekki, Lagos, claiming to know of the source of his problems and has the panacea to ward off the evil spirits dogging him and his business.

According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Simeon Imhonwa, Oyenuga hoodwinked Onwuka into doling out the huge amount of money over a period of seven months from March to September, 2014, pretending to be warding off evil spirits, but it was only when the hood was lifted from his eyes that Onwuka realised he had been taken for a ride and reported the case to the police and Oyenuga was arrested and arraigned on a three-count charge of obtaining by pretext, conspiracy and stealing.

"Oyenuga, armed with information about Onwuka, obtained from others still at large, convinced Onwuka to seek help from him.

The accused subsequently requested for money to consult the oracle and purchase materials to facilitate the casting out of the said spell from the complainant.

He obtained a total sum of N180 million," Imhonwa said.

The offences, according to the prosecutor, contravened sections 285, 312 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The Magistrate, Mrs Bola Osunsanmi, however, admitted the 'babalawo' to bail in the sum of N200,000, after he pleaded not guilty to the charges, while adjourning the case till  November 16, for mention.
