PDP Floors APC At The Tribunal In Ondo State

The election petition tribunal sitting in Akure, Ondo state has upheld the re-election of Joseph Akinlaja of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The tribunal at the weekend dismissed the petition filed by the All Progressives Congress against the victory of Akinlaja, a member of the House of Representatives representing the Ondo East/West federal constituency, New Telegraph reports.

The three-man panel dismissed the petition filed by the APC candidate in the March 28, 2015 House of Representatives election, Mr Olabamidele Olanubi, who asked the Tribunal to cancel the poll based on alleged irregularities.

Counsel to the APC candidate, Dr Tunji Abayomi filed a petition that the re-election of Akinlaja was characterised with irregularities and non-compliance to the Electoral Act.

In the judgement read by Justice A.B Akogun, the tribunal held that the petitioner failed to tender credible evidence or call credible witnesses to prove his case beyond reasonable doubt that  the election that produced Akinlaja was characterised with irregularities.

The tribunal also said that the PDP candidate scored the highest lawful votes cast at the poll contrary to claim by his APC opponent.

In a related development, the Ondo state chapter of the APC recently warned the state Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, and the national publicity secretary of the PDP, Mr. Olisah Metuh, against discouraging the anti-corruption war embarked upon by President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement issued and signed by the party’s publicity secretary, Omo’ba Abayomi Adesanya on Thursday, September 10,  APC noted that Nigerians voted for Buhari because the President promised to handle corruption in the country, adding that Mimiko and his aides should not exercise any fear if truly they had not mis-managed the resources of the state since they took over in 2009.
