PHOTOS: How The Government Abandoned The National Stadium Surulere
The once great national stadium Surulere, Lagos has become the new haven for local street thugs popularly called ‘area boys’ who have made the former world class sports center an eyesore.
The main bowl is no longer used for events as the government left the stadium to ruins without proper maintenance.
The stadium was built in 1972 with a caapacity 55,000. but was reduced to 45,000 in 1999. The highest number of people to have sat in the main bowl of the stadium was 85,000 in the 1980 African Cup of Nations final between Nigeria and Algeria.
It last hosted a national team game in 2004 and it has now become a ground for religious events.
Naij.com’s Emmanuel Osodi explored the stadium surroundings and captured images of the once great national stadium to show how the government has abandoned the grounds.
