Read The New Changes INEC Plans To Implement During Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in conjunction with political parties considered the idea of making changes to allow for simultaneous accreditation and voting in future elections.

Leadership reports that Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, the chairman of INEC disclosed this during his maiden consultative meeting with the 30 registered political parties in the country.

He assured the parties of the neutrality of the commission and that all parties have equal opportunities.

Yakubu noted that although the 2015 election guidelines stated that accreditation should end by 1pm and that voters should wait around for 30 minutes to vote. He said this was modified during the Southern Ijaw supplementary election after consultation with political parties and that simultaneous accreditation and voting was done.

“With the agreement of all political parties, we had simultaneous accreditation and voting in Bayelsa specifically at Southern Ijaw Local government by modifying our guidelines. But what we did was after our consultation with all the political parties.

“The commission had maintained this tradition, whatever we do we consult with critical stakeholders which includes political parties.”

“Southern Ijaw may be a small part of this country for us to have an assessment for whether we should extend it or we should just leave it as such by merely responding to exigency as need arises.

“What is the opinion of political parties on this? Do you think we should extend it nationwide in all future elections or we should maintain a status quo? We welcome your ideal on this regard.”

“How effective are the mechanisms for prevention and containment from the peace pact signed by all political parties before elections to the deployment of security to the conduct of the election?

“And how effective is our ability to deal with Electoral offenders? It is one point that has been made over and over again but as much as electoral offenders are not dealt with this cycle is likely to continue.

“We will discuss the mechanism by which the law allows the commission and other agencies to deal with electoral offenses and see if these mechanisms are adequate and if they are not, what will be your suggestions if going forward?”
