The outraged marchers are protesting against the ongoing communal violence in Benue state which has left hundreds dead, thousands more injured, and huge property damage.

The protesters have converged on Abuja’s city centre, incensed at what they see as the federal government’s inaction amid the ongoing bloodbath in Benue.

The One Idoma Initiative (ODI), the umbrella group representing the protesters, is calling on the federal government to set up internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in conflict riven Benue state.

Thousands of people have been left homeless and without money after the inter-communal clashes.

After the protest yesterday, the ODI eventually received a response from the convener of the National Emergency Management Agency Barr Paul Edah.

Edah promised the irate protestors that he would put pressure on the federal authorities to ensure that an inquiry commission is set up to get to the bottom of the crisis.

However, protesters remain on Abuja’s streets and it is unclear whether they will go home anytime soon.

Inter community killings have been ongoing in Benue state since 2007 with hundreds of confirmed deaths after fighting between local farmers and Fulani herdsmen.

Several villages in Agatu were raised in the attack, with only the decaying corpses of the slaughtered civilians remaining to testify to the assault.

The local men were shot or caught down with machetes and the women were raped before they were murdered, leaving scenes of unimaginable savagery.
