Encomiums have been showered on Olusegun Obasanjo by some prominent Nigerians as the former president marks his 79th birthday today, March 5, 2016.

Notable among those who have congratulated Obasanjo is President Muhammadu Buhari who sent in an early message yesterday.

Buhari appreciated Obasanjo for his wise counsels on economic, social and political issues. He said that Obasanjo’s willingness to embark on elections monitoring has brought about peaceful transitions in a lot of African countries.

Likewise, Governor feanyi Okowa of Delta state prayed for the continued grace of good health and mind for Obasanjo as he turns 79 years.

Okowa said Nigeria needs such forthright leader like Obasanjo at all levels, if the country will see itself out of the woods of its myriad of challenges.

He recounted that Obasanjo’s bold developmental legacies that dotted the Nigerian landscape from his days as a military head of state and as the civilian president between 1999 and 2007 and charged current leaders, both at the federal and state levels to buy into the elder statesman’s philosophy.

As part of Obasanjo’s 79th birthday celebration, a summit was organised organised by the Centre for Human Security at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta.

The 2016 National Summit and 4th International Colloquium was themed, “Human Security,Violent Extremism and Radicalisation, Seeking Sustainable Solutions.”

Speaking at the summit, Obasanjo, attributed the rise in violence, extremism and insecurity in the land to the failure of schools, churches and mosques to inculcate the right values in children.

He also urged the international community to rise up to the challenge posed by global insecurity, warning that their indifference poses serious consequences for innocent citizens.
