5 ways to survive Lagos traffic after a busy day at work

Every major city has some peculiarities and traffic is one of them, regardless of its level of infrastructural developments or the lack of it. We outline five activities you could engage in as you wait out the ‘inexplicable’ Lagos traffic after work. 

Traffic is a problem, in fact it is everything wrong with Lagos on many a days.

And if you are a working class adult, you know that our road networks are ‘wired to steal’ several hours from us by virtue of gridlocks from potholes and broken down vehicles on major roads among other causative factors.

But we must survive, whatever the odds. It doesn’t matter how disturbing this issue is we must find a way around getting past the menace that is traffic without losing our cool or creative energies on daily basis.

That said, we have come up with a list of things you could do just to stave boredom as you wait out traffic in Lagos on a working day when the gridlock has peaked.

1. Go to the movies – Nothing beats a sweet narrative on the big screens and there are several great cinemas around the Lagos metropolis thanks to the massive developments in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Instead of heading out and getting stuck in traffic for long hours which leads to an obvious waste of man hours, energy and other things, the movies present a thrilling option and can help stave the boredom and monotony of returning home in daily streams of traffic.

2. Grab a drink with friends – If you have had a bit of a tiring day, don’t get into traffic and compound issues. Avoid that. There are countless cool lounges within Lagos where you can have chilled drinks and grilled beef or turkey while you surf the web on your gadgets and pass time as traffic subsides.

Call a friend or two to join you, make it a fun evening which serves as a mini hang out of sorts. It plays an important role for you because having seen close buddies during the week you can choose to stay indoors during the weekend and get some proper sleep, do laundries and other personal stuff.

3. Eat out – Hit your favourite restaurant or try out a new location based on a colleague’s recommendation then order a nice, steaming hot meal while you wait out traffic.

If your significant other works within proximity, ring him or her so you guys meet up and have a sweet evening together while traffic ebbs slowly.

4. Take a home walk if you live within work neighbourhood – This might not sound too fun but it’s actually a great health tip. If you work within the neighbourhood where you live then you don’t have to worries about traffic so much as you can take a walk after office hours.

Park your car in the garage and do your heart some good by taking a cool walk while you catch the scenery around you, let the swoosh sounds of the breeze slap your face soothingly while you sip a bottle of juice or water or whatever it is that helps you stay hydrated depending on the distance you are covering.

5. Order pizza and chat on Skype till late in the evening – If the weather is crazy outside or you are really exhausted and would rather sit in one spot or just head home right away but there’s traffic out there, it’s fine. Order a box of pizza or something delicious and chill in the office while traffic subsides out there.

You can make it more fun by getting on a Skype conversation with your significant other, video calls are more fitting for these types of evenings so you guys can see each other while you catch up and laugh about any and everything.
