BREAKING NEWS: Nigerian Senate embarks on holiday
– The Nigerian Senate has taken a long break from its activities
– This was announced by Senate President, Bukola Saraki
– The Senate will resume back to plenary on Tuesday, July 12
The Nigerian Senate has taken a two-weeks break from its activities.
The decision was announced today, June 23, by Senate President, Bukola Saraki.
According to Saraki, the upper chamber will adjourn plenary till Tuesday, July 12.
It is not clear why the Senate embarked on this long break.
The decision might not be unconnected with the anticipated court appearance of Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu who have been accused of criminal conspiracy and forgery of the Senate standing rules.
The duo have been officially served with the charges by a Federal High Court in Abuja and they are expected to appear before the court on Monday, June 27.
The federal government had through the office of the Attorney General filed the charges against Saraki and Ekweremadu as well as former clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Abubakar Maikasuwa and his deputy, Benedict Efeturi.
The government;s action prompted senators under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to withdrawn their support for President Muhammadu Buhari.
The senators said they will no longer cooperate with the APC government until the government put a stop to its belligerent acts.
Meanwhile, Saraki has reiterated for the umpteenth time that he knows nothing about how the rules were adopted in the inauguration of the 8th Senate which produced him as Nigeria’s number three citizen.
According to the Senate president, the case of forgery was just another phase in the orchestrated persecution he has faced since he emerged as Senate President
